2006 LSI SUPPLEMENTAL GRANT AWARDS
1) Philosophy of Nature Forum TRIESTE-NIF (Nature, Intentionality and Finality Research Group) (SophiaEuropa)
Dipartimento di Filosofia, Universitá degli Studi di Trieste, Italy
Chairperson: Antonio RussoThis society has been quite active at its host university, offering a multidisciplinary series of lectures and public seminars and all the usual activities of good local societies. However, this society has also played a major role in building a vibrant pan-European network of high-level researchers who are engaged in the philosophical issues that surround the science and religion dialogue. The group helps organize international conferences and networking opportunities, including an upcoming conference on “action theories” to be held in Rome and a conference entitled, “The Concept of Infinity: Philosophical, Theological, Mathematical, and Science of Nature Views,” to be held in Tübingen. The leadership of this society launched a webforum for and has become the center of the entire SophiaEuropa project. Future plans call for publication of work generated in the research program. We could not have made as much progress as we have with the SophiaEuropa project with the help of this society, and their leadership is proving to be a great benefit to the wider LSI network.
Award Accepted by : Antonio Russo2)SophiaEuropa Oxford
Chair: Dr.Yee
Margaret Yee is Senior Research Fellow of St.Cross College Oxford, Hon.Associate Director of Ian Ramsey Centre, and Chairman and Joint Convener of SophiaEuropa Oxford.
Membership in this winning society consists of some of the leading scholars at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Academic fields represented by the membership include physics, chemistry, psychology, zoology, nanomaterials, systematic theology, practical ethics, philosophy, sociology, biochemistry, psychiatry, and international relations. They have launched a multi-tiered program under the umbrella theme of “Nature, Intentionality, and Finality,” that brings together the core group for bi-annual organizational and study meetings, fortnightly seminars, and periodic international conferences, as well participation in the pan-European SophiaEuropa project. Their series of seminars and conferences on God and Nature used the tragedy of the tsunami as a touchstone for their explorations. Their next series deals with the issue of embryonic and stem-cell research and their meaning for the human person. The society has collaborated with other intra-departmental groups associated with the university, including the Forum on Science and Religion hosted by the department of physics, and the Michael Argyle Forum for Psychology and Religion. The society aims to generate a “snowball effect” in promoting transdisciplinary dialogue and inter-institutional approaches to research in issues of science and religion.

SophiaEuropa Trieste Group
TRIESTE is a crossroad between the Central-European and the Mediterranean cultures, and has always been a pole of attraction. Among its features,a fundamental role is played by its historical and cultural background with the high technical and professional skills of its citizens which found their best exspression in the ship-building industry. The smallest capital of a province, Trieste is also the capital of Friuli - Venezia Giulia, a region with a special statute, bordering with Austria and Slovenia and a member of the CEI (Central- European Iniziative). At the time of its full splendor - as a port and trading centre of vital importance for the economy of the Hapsburg empire - many factors contributed to conferring its typical character to the city, so cherished by the most eminent names in international culture such as James Joyce, Sigmund Freud, Rainer Maria Rilke, Johann Winckelmann, not to mention Umberto Saba, Scipio Slataper, Italo Svevo, Virgilio Giotti and Pierantonio Quarantotti Gambini, who were all natives of Trieste. Such an atmosphere remains a fundamental reason of being, a way of thinking and living in this corner of the World trapped between the rocks and the sea, but totally open and ready to accept the most diverse school of thought.
